Rainy Day...Again

We have been having record rain, here in Southern California. It's good, and the "naysayers" that talk of drought can be quiet. In fact, for all of California the rainfall and snow totals have been record breakers.
Meanwhile, here where we live...it's been wet...our sprinklers were turned off and the lawn is sloppy...
Birds that have migrated are back though, and I think I showed you my peach tree...it started blooming on Christmas day and continued. There are still blooms on it, but the peaches remarkably have started setting! I worried about the rain and record breaking cold for our area, but the bees had little else to feed on, so when the sun shone, they made a "beeline" for our tree....
Today, is again wet. I took Molly our lab

for a walk this morning before the rain came...it was indeed short (too short for her liking) and as we got home the sky turned an ominous black...seconds after getting in, the rain came, filling the road outside to almost river status...
Right now, the rain has slacked off...

This is the view from the living room window, our favorite spot to be on a cold rainy morning. Our feet up, a fire going, coffee and a view....
So, while it's so cozy in here, let me catch you up on what I did this week.
You have heard me talking about the book and show on Netflix, "Tidying up". Well, I have been working on that. Now, Marie Kondo believes in doing all the clothes at one time, all the books, and not by area...such as a specific room or space.
However, I am not really wired that way...but, I think she would be thrilled by the result!
I cleaned out the vitamin/pill cupboard and I started in on the sheet cupboard!
Man, who doesn't have a messy one? I mean, do you fold the fitted sheets correctly?? I got into the habit of just wadding them and stuffing them into baskets I had in there.
You don't have baskets?? They are amazing....
However, sheets at the bottom got lost, especially under the wadded fitted sheets.
So, I pulled out every sheet, every pillowcase and every fitted sheet and got real. Real Tough!
I had too many sheets for the guest bed that rarely gets used. I had a fitted sheet for it that was no longer fitted..as the elastic was shot. I had way too many pillowcases...many were linen that I had made. So, using the "Kondo" method of folding I folded matched pillowcases together into the basket for our bed and a basket for the guest bed. As I have probably too many pillows for that bed I kept several. Then the sheets for that bed into a basket, with a label. Then I did the same for the master bed. Yup...I found one fitted sheet was on its last legs and I have one set. So, I have now ordered a new set. (Pottery Barn was having a white sale and a linen sheet set was cheaper than one linen sheet!)
I folded sheets to neatly fit into those baskets and this is the result....

The empty spot on top, its for the mattress pad I have to replace! The other one was shot and totally gross, so it went into the trash. The rest of the sheets etc went into large bags and off to Savers thrift.
By standing them up as she said you can see every pillowcase and every sheet! I love this new method. The sheets that I washed recently, got the one warm day to hang in the sun. How I love sun dried sheets! They fold so very well and smell so good!
I also did quilting this week.
I used a different method that sounded so good when I bought it....
I followed directions to use it on the border, which included using a small bit of temporary adhesive...which I did...and then sew and after you tear it off. Doesn't that sound divine? Place, stitch and tear away. The design was lovely. However, I will never ever use this again. Ever. The paper literally doesn't tear completely away. I used the temp adhesive I always use but even after it had evaporated and gone away, the little pieces were almost impossible to get rid off. Tear all away?? uh uh.....If you tear too hard, stitches get pulled...the paper is still there and I bound it and then washed it...yikes..there is still paper on it!
So, slowly here and there I pick at it...I fear it may always have paper!
My personal recommendation...don't use it...beginner or no....
So, as I sit here by the fire, with sky beginning to clear a bit...I wish you a wonderful weekend! I hope you get inspired to organize....

Almost Good As New

If you have been reading the blog, you know what happens when you spray Lysol on Oil Rubbed Bronze door handles. Yeah, not pretty. And, a very expensive mistake...or at least it can be.
Behold....(as a reminder)

It basically just takes the finish off!
So, I asked you readers what I should use to fix it, not wanting of course to take the set off and take it to a refinisher who would charge upwards of $300 to fix it.....
So, One wonderful reader mentioned, Rub n Buff.....
That was an "Ah ha" moment.....
Except that around here, Rub n Buff seems to only come in gold, brass and patina....not what I was looking for.......
So, I went online and happily I found, Rub n Buff comes in a multitude of colors! Now, they don't have Oil Rubbed Bronze (that's too easy), but they had Ebony (black) which most closely resembles our Bronze color, as it is the darker one.....
So, I experimented on an inside door handle that was very brassy....
And although I am not going to show you the …

A Little bit of This and That

I need to sew, something everyday, or I get grumpy!
Today, it was a pillow....ah.....
I found a cross stitch panel that someone had done, and fell in love with it. It's actually a covered bridge, but it looks kinda like a barn...so I took it home, no idea at all what to do with it.
Today, it hit me....a pillow!
When I went to the closet, I found a pillow form....sweet!!
The panel was almost the right size, at least width wise....height wise it was a tad short. I measured and sure enough it was almost 5" different...so, I went to the closet again and found 2 1/2' strips from another project...perfect! So, I used those on each end....
So what about a backing....hummmm. I love linen. The family room, where this may end up is being painted a taupe grey....so into my drawer where linen lives, and there was a remnant from another project...grey linen....
So, long story short....I literally just stitched it together....and made it an envelope closure...that I stitched closed wit…

New Year's Resolutions....

Do you make resolutions??
What are they??
I am thinking about a few...
I want to clean the garage out...
reorganize a few cupboards....
Oh and don't even mention the closet.....
(Hubby did his....I haven't....)
Let me know what yours are....
(Really, if you don't make comments I am sad...and might stop posting and the blog might stop...)
