An Early Spring Cleaning

Well, I have been sick since the day before my birthday, Jan. 3. However, I am almost all better...less coughing and able to get a few more things done.
Yesterday, I was putting some clothes away...well, on top of the pile in the closet, and the whole pile crashed down...it was time to face facts...
My closet had become a hazard...and sick or not, I had to face it....
So I did...I pulled everything out and started to apply the folding technique from "The Magic Art of Tidying", the book that was so popular a couple of years ago.
We recently saw an episode on Netflix, where she comes in and helps tidy....
The woman, Marie, is Japanese and has some unique approaches to clearing clutter.
One is the way to fold clothes. Now, when I read the book it wasn't clear....but watching it on TV, I understood her approach...
So, I did her folding...
The idea is you need to see your clothes, and folded clothes fit in a smaller area....
So, after purging of clothes that "no longer give me joy"(yes, that is a thing in her book and on the Netflix show)....I went about folding.
Now, we do not have a walk-in closet. We have an average 1959 closet with sliding doors.
I have two sections, he has one. So clothes management is a real issue. I would love a walk-in...and we actually considered building into the garage for one, but cost and reality of no garage for both cars just made us rethink what we have instead.
So...I do not have a before picture...
But I have a after....

Years ago, I got rid of dressers, because I lost things in the bottom of drawers and it was too tight in the closet....
So I went to a shelf system instead. Mostly, it works. This is the picture of the clothes, folded.
The other side of the closet is hanging stuff...that needs to be worked on...as it was I had to lie down for a while in the middle of doing this...
The little rubbermaid drawer thing is for socks and underwear. Believe it or not, it works!
I can see and get what I need....
Besides the closet, I put my new gifts into action...

My girls gave me copper for Christmas...just the right amount of glitz!
Oh, and no one believes me that my peach tree blooms in December. This year it bloomed on December 25! Yes, it did, on Christmas day!
I looked at it today, and the rest of the buds are so full...they will be bursting forth soon...
Hope the bees come and pollinate...
Have a great day!

Nancy, Good for you! I have watched that show now three times and really need to 'let go' of a ton of stuff. I think you did a fantastic job of organization there (and in a limited space). I don't want to get rid of too much stuff until we buy a place and I figure out what I want and need. Keep it up, kiddo, and I hope you are feeling a whole lot better today. xo Diana
Nancy, I hope you are completely well by now. My wardrobe has always been pretty much under control, but watching the new Marie Kondo series (I haven't read the book) inspired a few refinements. My husband just saw 15 minutes of one episode (the one you mentioned) and started Konmari-ing MY stuff! He is very particular about my shoes, of all things, and went into my closet and pulled out his 10 favorites, smashed their boxes and placed them on two shelves in my office bookcase. The nerve! Anyway … that kind of got me going. And I cleared out the two largest drawers in my dresser to make room for bed linens, so now things aren't crashing down when I open the linen closet door.

Almost Good As New

If you have been reading the blog, you know what happens when you spray Lysol on Oil Rubbed Bronze door handles. Yeah, not pretty. And, a very expensive mistake...or at least it can be.
Behold....(as a reminder)

It basically just takes the finish off!
So, I asked you readers what I should use to fix it, not wanting of course to take the set off and take it to a refinisher who would charge upwards of $300 to fix it.....
So, One wonderful reader mentioned, Rub n Buff.....
That was an "Ah ha" moment.....
Except that around here, Rub n Buff seems to only come in gold, brass and patina....not what I was looking for.......
So, I went online and happily I found, Rub n Buff comes in a multitude of colors! Now, they don't have Oil Rubbed Bronze (that's too easy), but they had Ebony (black) which most closely resembles our Bronze color, as it is the darker one.....
So, I experimented on an inside door handle that was very brassy....
And although I am not going to show you the …

A Little bit of This and That

I need to sew, something everyday, or I get grumpy!
Today, it was a pillow....ah.....
I found a cross stitch panel that someone had done, and fell in love with it. It's actually a covered bridge, but it looks kinda like a barn...so I took it home, no idea at all what to do with it.
Today, it hit me....a pillow!
When I went to the closet, I found a pillow form....sweet!!
The panel was almost the right size, at least width wise....height wise it was a tad short. I measured and sure enough it was almost 5" different...so, I went to the closet again and found 2 1/2' strips from another project...perfect! So, I used those on each end....
So what about a backing....hummmm. I love linen. The family room, where this may end up is being painted a taupe grey....so into my drawer where linen lives, and there was a remnant from another project...grey linen....
So, long story short....I literally just stitched it together....and made it an envelope closure...that I stitched closed wit…

New Year's Resolutions....

Do you make resolutions??

Oh and don't even mention the closet.....

Let me know what yours are....
(Really, if you don't make comments I am sad...and might stop posting and the blog might stop...)
