Around the Garden

Summer is garden time....and though we are mostly overcast in our "May Gray" and "June Gloom" time of year, our garden is making time and growing....
This year I have planted what we really use...and what is hard to get really fresh....
I make and sell Pepper Jelly, so I need lots of peppers...and we have those....
These are some purple peppers that I am trying this year....I am not so sure if these will go into the jelly, but they are pretty....
I also fed the garden from the worm composter before all our rains...so it isn't at all surprising that I have a few "volunteers" in the garden.....
One has me baffled.

Isn't it beautiful?? It is a squash for sure, a vining plant that grows almost 3-6" a day. It is in the middle of my peppers and it's too late to move it. I have it pitifully trained on the short little obelisk which it has totally outgrown already....
In a few days I gave it permission to grow up the mammoth sunflower....
Problem is, I have no idea what it is. It's probably not even edible! Anyone familiar?? The flower is about 2 1/2" across...almost 3".....
I hope something gets pollinated...so I can find out what it is......
So, I keep weeding and primping the garden....seems like everything is growing at an amazing pace....
So, when I am not in the garden.....
I am quilting....duh.....
This is a baby quilt I've been commissioned to do....and there are 30 squares, each with 18 pieces....
Now, I have to put it all together......
That is what's going on around here....
If anyone knows what the squash plant is, let me know....

Happy Memorial Day Weekend!

It is still hard to believe that it is the start of summer with Memorial Weekend here already!
We kicked the weekend off with going to the Scottish Festival at the Fairgrounds this Saturday.
It was delightful...crowded but fun and Royce was totally enamored with the music, the drums (especially the drums) and bagpipes.
We started with the mass bagpipe bands and Marine corps in the main arena...delightful....
It always gives me goosebumps and a few tears as I watch and listen....
Then we walked a bunch..ate some fair type food....and listened to lots of music and went home...
I fell in love with a hammered dulcimer music and Hubby bought me a flash drive so I will be using that in the background when sewing....
I have been doing lots of sewing....I finally finished our Anniversary quilt which will be unveiled for guests at our party June 17....so I am sharing it with you....
It went from this....
...to this...in 2 months...
82"x88"...
Fully quilted on my machine all free hand and free motion....
Hubby was pretty proud of it....
and on the back...
Then, today, we watched Royce while Mom worked ( she a realtor) and they came early to have breakfast and then he stayed ....we played a lot and played some more....Then being a growing boy he ate a homemade hamburger and an entire orange....then we took him for a stroller ride (the only way to get him to take a nap) and he slept...so did we....for an hour....
then he woke up and was hungry again....
Luckily, Mom came back so we didn't have to feed him dinner too....but we will be the first weekend in June...for three days! Wow...If I am tired now.....
Anyway....
Here he is with he squirt bottle and "a crown" of bind weed woven together....He had so much fun with he squirt bottle....but after an hour and a half, he came in and said..."Grammy, I'm wet!"...yes, yes he was...so we changed his clothes and thats when we made lunch...cheese burgers....

So plans for tomorrow are simple....we are going to relax. I am going to sew as I have another quilt order for a friend who has become a Great-Grandmother...to a little girl....so I am once again behind the machine tomorrow....
After that quilt, I will be quilting the 4th of July quilt for our friends whose anniversary is the 4th. They just lost her Mom this last week so that quilt is that much more important....
As you can see...I've been busy...
Hugs! Happy Memorial Day to you all! Thank a serviceman for their service and for helping keep America free!

Glimpses of Mother's Day

Ok, so I am so spoiled!
I got to have my whole family together for a BBQ on Mother's Day!
And...the girls said they don't have any pictures of me with them...so we did a photo shoot....how sweet is that??

I don't normally show anyone what I look like...but, here it is, the real me...and those are my precious girls...who are grown women.
And the sweetest of all is Hubby, who was behind the camera the whole time...
He also gave me a new sweet seat for my sewing room...now my back isn't so sore .....
It says "Bernina" but I have a Babylock....these chairs are so so very comfy.....

And these guys are putting it together for me.....
Royce and I rolled down the hall to the sewing room....
This is my chair...it's pretty spiffy.....
 Yeah, I guess I could say I have a Bernina...a chair....ha!
And this is the old chair....which never went up high enough so I always hurt my neck....and no support at all....
So, there you have it...
Pictures of me and my family, except for Hubby who stayed behind the camera....
Have a great day!

In The Week Before Mother's Day

What a week, (actually three weeks, but who is counting??)we have had!
Seems like it was non-stop with workmen or installers.....
Our oven combo we ordered to replace the old oven finally got delivered and installed....
It was backordered as not many people want white on appliances these days. But, I'm old fashioned. My kitchen was all white....once.
They managed to put chrome and stainless on it after all....but, I am happy it fit in the same "hole" and didn't need any adjustments there. And....I have a microwave! We haven't had one for 12 years!
Truth be told...the design is a bit different..and yours truly has to stand on tip toe to reach said items in the microwave....but it's all good.
But, it was delivered on Monday, at exactly the same time that our new maid started work!
So, she had to work first in the bathrooms etc while they tinkered with the kitchen area....
It is a funny oven because it is so computerized that I might have to take classes! (LOL) not really....
After our new maid left, our house was so clean! All at once!
I am getting old and broken and haven't been able to clean the whole house at one time...so she is wonderful.....
While she was cleaning, I finished up the quilt top for our anniversary....now I have to quilt it.

I did a totally different border than I have ever done..."piano keys"....
I will definitely show it to you when I've quilted it....
We also found out that we are going to be Grandparents again to another boy!!
She had the blood test done to find out, she was so hoping for a girl. But, God has decided she is a great mom and deserves another boy....so around Nov.14 we get to meet this little man!
Meanwhile, Royce found the doll his Mom was saving (in case she had girls) and was practicing holding a baby!
Then, he put the baby down for a nap....

Who can resist that face?? Another darling boy?? Sure!! Now Royce will have a playmate.....
Anyway, I hope your week has been good and that you have super plans for Mother's Day!!
Don't forget to shower Moms with hugs and good cheer!

Just a Few Things

Now that the dust has settled (literally)...I found time to do a few other things....
Yesterday we had our youngest daughter, our grandson and son-in-law (who was working nights an awful lot) to dinner. Tues for the last couple of years has been "movie" night. At first, it started being just regular TV that she wanted to get caught up on....and the little guy would fall asleep. Then he got older and falling asleep wasn't in the schedule, so we developed movie night with movies for him to watch.
We always start with a dinner and last night because our Son-in-Law was coming Hubby smoked fantastic ribs! And I made a peach pie with the last of our peaches!
It isn't terribly pretty, mostly because I thawed two frozen pie crusts and used a bottom crust flipped over the top to make the top crust....it tasted awesome....
But aside from our dinner, I have been playing with a few things....
Like this centerpiece thing I got from Goodwill.....
It's kinda cool, which is why I got it....It has 5 different sized bottles strapped with a cast iron piece and screwed to a wood base. It is very heavy. The bottles had corks, which I removed and I had a lot of red roses that I cut to different heights to play with this centerpiece....
It isn't "perfect"....I had ideas what it should look like...but we will see....
Has anyone had something like this???
Ideas???
Anyway.....
I have been sewing like a little busy person to make us a quilt for our bed...a gift to us for our anniversary. That is like 6 weeks away....
I want to unveil it at our party....
It will be made up of a center area with "road to oklahoma" blocks and then a little frame of navy and then surrounded by a big border of another pattern....yet to be determined.
The design has changed several times since I started....so I hope it turns out ok...
Even though I have been quilting for 40 years...I am still learning and improving my techniques...I am currently taking another Craftsy class by Edyta Sitar and learning little things along the way. I hope one day to make the quilt she making in the class, but I mostly took the class to get ideas on how to use the scraps that pile up when I make a quilt......
Here is the quilt stack of squares I have so far....5 more to go and I have to get some fabric to finish....
The corners become stars when stitched together....These are 12" so 5 across and 6 down make a good size center....The entire quilt is blue and white and I even have the backing already!!
I think I even have batting...most amazing.
Well, I am off to the gym this morning...I have started going again...even if Hubby won't go...
