The Big Reveal

After a 12 day journey, from a wedding to a house on a lake and then home, we came home to another house. Well, it felt like it anyway.
The backyard is totally transformed!
Yes, the pavers were done before we left, and the day we left wood for the pergola was delivered.

This is where we left to go our our niece's wedding....and while we were away we got a few updates from the contractor....

But that was while he was working....
When we got home....this is what we found....

Hubby and I had dinner last night with the kids out in our covered cool serene patio....
And this is breakfast....

After Hubby had finished his coffee, I got him to help me move stuff around a "touch"...
You see, the fountain wasn't there, and the BBQs were the first thing you saw coming out....
So, the BBQs are along the fence and the fountain is where it needs to go....

The fountain, our anniversary present for our anniversary 4 years ago, sits here, so we had to move the table over a touch to accommodate it. This is a BIG patio...and we put it off for 26 years...
Isn't it nice? It is even nicer for summer and fall heat...it blocks the heat and rays that used to pour into the family room.....Brings the inside temps down about 10 degrees!

Like the new chairs?? We were supposed to get them before the patio, but waiting was so much better. Our contractor accepted delivery for the chairs for us (that was a story in itself)...and now we have a perfect place to sit!
Hmm, guess I should figure out what is for dinner!
Have a great day!

While Waiting for Our Big Reveal of the New Patio....

Ok, so the guys are done with the pavers. It is blissfully quiet out today, with only the birds chirping.
The patio is stunning....but I can't show you yet. You see the pergola goes up starting Friday. Stuff that needs to go to it real place sits on the patio, but not where it needs to go.
Ok....I'll give you a sample....

This is a picture of the back "wall" being put in.... We are stunned most by the back wall, big enough to sit on  and far prettier than the "wall" that was there.....

Here is a shot, minutes after the guys had gone...

And here is the shot from the other side, looking out to the lawn....the table and BBQs are totally not where they need to be....
See the drain in the foreground?? It is hard to see, but awesome none the less there are two and the patio has just a tiny tiny grade to pull water that way....
So, When the pergola is up and all in place, I will show you.....
But, while the guys were working, what does a quilter do?? She makes quilts...
I worked on two...

This quilt is for our daughter's sister in law....I will be adding strings to the balloons via free motion quilting and eyes for the elephants. I used a spray adhesive, that is a temporary adhesive...it started letting go, but when I quilt them, I think I can use it to my advantage....we will see....

This is all free hand design, sketched and then cut...using adhesive that is far better than the spray adhesive....all pieces are then zig zagged and then there will be some decorative stitching on the boots and saddle....
I also plan on creating something for the saddle to sit on....
Ok, well....I will keep you in the loop...

It Is Almost a Patio!

Work on the patio continued yesterday at an amazing speed. From just the base to pavers in hours.
They even got a bit of pitch to the drains incorporated, but not too much.
It was joyous to walk out there this morning and feel the pavers underfoot.
I was planning where things are going to go.
Since the contractor is going to be building the pergola, we have to figure where things will go, so that maybe we can turn on the sprinklers again....otherwise, we will have to add a new lawn to the project!
They will be finishing up the patio and then adding the small planter wall. It made a huge difference to cut off the little round garden bed yesterday, must have added about 9 square feet! Perfect for one of the BBQs!
So, today I will get shots of the progress. They will most certainly be done by tomorrow, two days ahead of schedule!
Simply amazing.
Their clean up has been pretty good, not spotless, but very good. And hopefully it doesn't rain today. That would throw everything off.
Yeah a 20% chance of rain this morning.
Go figure.
Anyway...here is what I have for pictures for you....

Pretty awesome, right?? I understand why it is so expensive, and yet this company charges a fair amount in the end...They are organized and considerate. This team works so well together, just like a well oiled machine....
And pavers are so perfect for all kinds of soil conditions, especially adobe soil that expands and contracts all the time. When there is a problem,  God forbid a broken pipe, or cracked paver due to roots etc, you can get it up fix it and replace. Well, in our case, we call them. There is a two year warranty on their work and after that a small fee to come out and take care of issues....
Cement is a much bigger issue.
Cement will always crack.
Can you tell I like the pavers?? They have done a good job....and we are pleased...

Laying the Pavers

The guys worked tirelessly yesterday, a Saturday I might add. I am used to workmen who work Mon-Fri....these guys work Mon-Sat. Imagine that.
Anyway, they did a drain, leveled and starting constructing the step.
Now, after watching, I see why it is so expensive to have a company do your patio or driveway.
And after watching, I see the way our grade goes. It isn't just one pitch, it's two!
They have taken that into consideration...and thus the step on the main part of the patio and the drains.
Our soil is adobe...hard stuff. The contractor, Mike, who is building the pergola had to use a jackhammer to get his holes big enough to set his forms for the main posts of the pergola.
Yeah, it's tough work.
But, the paver guys worked longer than the project manager thought. They worked until 3:45...on a Saturday.
Look what they got done....

This is my view this morning...They have a lot of cutting to do it looks like....
The guys moved I can't tell you how many cubic feet of "base" which is a concrete and gravel base, that once you add water becomes a loose cement that they tamp down and then put sand on top of, which then is leveled and then pavers go on top of that. Once pavers are dry fit, they will gently be tapped and then a poly-sand will be put on top and worked in.....
 Lots of base.....
My garden and lawn are suffering a bit. But since the lawn is a crab grass/ mix it will come back within a month with feeding and water....
Although, it is hard to have workmen at your house....and these guys are really good...this team is amazing. The project manager said....oh they will start laying pavers on Monday....yeah, they started yesterday. That was day two!
More pictures to come.....

And the beat goes on....

Yesterday, I was so amazed by the speed at which the patio came out, but also by the synchronized work between the guys and then the truck that came when it needed to with the pavers, then the truck that came to take the debris away. Of course, today there is even more debris, mostly dirt that will need to be taken away. I think because its Saturday they might wait until Monday. That's ok.
This is the yard today....

We have the contractor who is putting in his footings for the posts, and the patio guys doing a drain system. The patio never had a drain before...
It will be a bit more chaos today. Tomorrow, no one will be here. The yard will still be a mess.
Nagi, the project manager said that pavers will start going in on Monday! Amazing......
We will keep you posted....

So It Begins

We got up early today, so we could have lots of time to have breakfast and coffee before 7:30 am.
Today, the old patio is leaving...
Nice team of guys, all shook hands with us and got to work.....

The hardest part of the moving was the box with the peppers....it was falling apart, but they did their best to keep it together....
Then, the outdoor plug wouldn't work because it has a waterproof protector for big plugs....
Soon, the jackhammer will start going......
I have dreaded this part for years....but one has to go through this part, to get to the good part....
wow...here they go....
It's hard to sit here, I want to run away.....

So far there appears to be no rebar....makes it an easy job for them to remove.....and gives us answers as to why it was cracking so very badly!

What is interesting is that it is peeling back layers of history....there was this patio laid over another patio....and as they peel it back we understand it more......
Nice group of guys, I like our project manager who is right there working with the guys....
Amazing they started just a bit ago and are half way through the patio demo.
