A Major Feat

Well, I have finished a Major quilt Feat for me.
A 81" x 99" quilt (queen size) in my home machine.
No long arm machine used. No sending it out.
It is for a special person, who is getting married....
....and I might not do this again...we'll see.....
It is a big job to heft and push and struggle with such a big quilt, so it isn't perfect....but I am very pleased with it none the less.
It is a single Irish Chain pattern with the colored fabric by Moda....I used two layer cakes to make it with the color and three layer cakes to do the white.
The white areas were done in a Celtic knot design....slightly modified using a stencil....

The squares with squares...are done with a cathedral design....all free hand sewing....
The entire quilt took from January to Yesterday....
A Major Feat I think.....
Now I have to figure out how to mail it......

What's missing?

Let's play a game. It's called, "What's Missing?"
In the picture try to see what was missing.....
Can't figure it out? Don't remember what was there before?? I'll give you a hint. It was big and in the far corner.....
Give up?
Okay, it is the Kitchen Aid Mixer!
It stood for 12 years (maybe more) in the corner. And, I used it a great deal. But, since I've been gluten free and not making things with wheat, the mixer has been a catch all and doing no real work at all. So, I moved it out....
Now the coffee maker and toaster are in the corner and there is more counter space!
Where did I put it??
Right here!
This is some major storage for me.....I also moved the old metal tea cart in here to hold canning jars...now they are also close by...and I don't have to get dressed up to go out to the garage...and the mixer fits fine....
I love having a more open counter!
My sister is coming to visit and she is going to make her famous cinnamon rolls! She will need that space.....
Hubby isn't convinced...the coffee maker is far from the sink this way....but I like the fact that it is more tucked away than the very first thing you see....
What do you think??

Quilting with Vinyl

I got you! Did you really think I'd quilt with vinyl??
It did remind me of quilting though as I had those 12x12 squares to use.
So, let me go back to the beginning.
remember the water heater closet?? How the wood that the heater used to sit on got so wet and looked so ugly??
Well, I have my eye on using part of that closet for storage (that will be a different blog).
I really can't do anything about the ugly walls....but there is floor space in there and I want it.
So, I got it into my head to do something about the floors.....peel and stick vinyl squares !
So, I made a trip to Lowe's and found some neat tiles for 38 cents a piece!
Really!
So, I bought  more than I needed for sure, because it has been over 35 years since I did anything with these..

So here is the cupboard, see the ugly wood?? It actually is amazing it is still in one piece what with 5 hot water heaters giving up the ghost in 25 years. Isn't it??
Anyway, so I cleaned it up as best I could without adding any water.....
Then, I measured and did a "dry" layout to see how I wanted the squares....
The first three really just went down....no real measuring to do. I had decided that I wanted the little cut pieces to be in the back....
The first three were just "peel and stick"....
The rest I needed to measure and cut. I chose to use kitchen scissors...not the best method as it tends to "rumple" the vinyl...however, this is a closet...so no biggie. If this were your floor, use a linoleum cutter.

Looks better, doesn't it?? It's cleaner and now its useable space.
Anything that goes in there has to be water safe and non flammable....afterall, this is the water heater closet and furnace closet.
I'll let you know what I decide, but Hubby has plans if I move something....
Hope you have a great day!

Quilting away

I've been very busy building the quilt for my niece and her fiancé.
I wanted to make it at least queen size.....and I've only ever done a double bed size...so this is the biggest quilt I have done, and I am trying to quilt it myself.
Why you ask? Well, I happen to love quilting, though in this case I may have bitten off more than I can chew so to speak.
It measures right now....81 x 99
That is big.
However, if I pull this off, it will be lovely.
She isn't expecting it....doesn't know I'm trying to do it, so we will see.
Yesterday, I finished the top.
Here are some shots....
So, you can get a feel for the new sewing set up that I have in the craft room....
This set up allows me to get more done as I am just right there, no trekking down the hall to the table to use the Accuquilt, and I can sew and then iron....it moves more efficiently....
Here is the big quilt draped over the iron....I need a bigger ironing board! Is there such a beast?? A quilting ironing board??
IN any case in the next few days I plan to lay it out on the floor....carefully on the wood floors....and get my "sandwich" together....and then start the quilting...this will not be a "quilt in a day".....
Cheers!

The Craft Room is ....mostly done

Well, I am using the craft room with its new table....the bed is gone, and I had to move the armoire (I never realized how big that thing is)...
I had to take down the hanging shelf....I am not sure it will go back...and in moving things around I realized that the room really does need paint...
However, I am pleased. I was able to work on the quilt I am presently making without several trips down the hall to the dining table. I can pull out the Accuquilt and use it right there...and then turn and sew and then turn again and iron. That is amazing!
I will be able I believe to sew a larger quilt with the table holding it up !
So, mission accomplished.

I had hoped for a bit neater and tidier....I think that will come with use. The main thing is that it functions.....The table I ordered came from Amazon....but the box said Walmart...ha! It is a Better Homes and Gardens dining table....58" x 35" so it tucks in nicely and is decidedly smaller than the twin bed no one (human) was using.....
I like that I can tuck the cutter and sewing stuff under the table....they had nowhere to go before....
In the meantime, the quilt started growing yesterday and I feel good about that...
Hope you have a good day.
Looks like I will be calling the appliance repair guy....the dishwasher was making a terrible noise....We turned it on at 10pm on the way to bed. In the middle of the night (i.e. early morning) at 4 am I heard this noise...it was loud and coming from the dishwasher...really??
So....I will be busy doing that today.....may end up having to buy a new one.....
