Dreamy Pillow

Today, I thought I'd show you a pillow I made for my Etsy store.
It is machine embroidered by me on the main panel, which is a linen fabric. The side pieces are remnants from a vintage French linen towel that I had. It is backed with a fun red burlap. And the pillow form is a down pillow that I bought at a upholstery fabric store.
It measures 16"L x 8" T...

"Reve de Provence" means "Dream of Provence"....simple, and perfect for many decor, especially French Country.
If you are interested look at my store....www.wildoakdesigns.etsy.com
It is very reasonably priced.
Have a great day!

Today, I am a Scot....

First off, Happy Memorial Day, and thanks to all the military past and present for all your service.
This weekend at our Orange County Fairgrounds is the Scottish Festival...we haven't been for about 7 years. It was nice to go back.
Today, I am an American and I am a Scot....

Since our family has Scottish backgrounds, it made it fun.

We enjoyed walking around and seeing all the clans, the kilts, the games and the marching groups. I love the drums!
We wanted to go to the opening ceremonies, so we headed there to get a good seat...
Hubby got us meat pies and chips (definitely not diet food).

They massed large groups to make up 84 pipers and 84 drummers, which was quite thrilling.

Appearing for the first time in 8 years, the Marine Corps band from Camp Pendelton. It was awesome to hear them play and watch them march! Then they played with the bagpipe and drums, wow. Most poignant was the audience and hearing them sing with the bands and clapping for all the military....
Groups come from all over the state to compete in contests, and bagpipes and drums play all over the fairgrounds...quite thrilling...
Across from the competition field for pipes and drums, there is the caber toss....
The caber is the telephone pole sized pole that they have to lift and throw so that it flips over, no small feat. Mind boggling!
It was a great day filled with patriotism and pride both to be American and to be a Scot....
Now it is time for tea and biscuits.....
Thanks for visiting....

Mixed media

Today, I felt a little inspired by all those wonderful bloggers that I read each day.
Rosemary at Villabarnes gave a tutorial about using gesso on different items to give an aged look, so I bought some to play with and experimented with that and then some....
This was cheapie frame that I had that was that bright brassy color, and it was time for a change. First, I painted it gray. Then, I brushed on gesso and wiped off. It looked good, but flat.  I went back over it with a bit more gray. Then I brushed on more gesso and sprinkled crushed eggshells over the gesso.  Now it looked a bit more "chippy". I wiped off the excess gesso and let it dry....
When it dried I waxed it.....It definitely looks old.....
While it dried, I played with the tutorial that Rosemary gave, of making "mercury glass" bottles, except mine were two little canning jars.

Ok, so they didn't turn out quite as I expected...but they were fun. She recommended liquid silver leaf (or you could use a metallic silver paint, which I had)...so....
My pictures aren't the best...but you get the idea. It took two coats, the first being the hardest as the paint doesn't like sticking to glass....
I plan on hanging them I think....but the light shines through...next I will get the liquid silver leaf...I am definitely intrigued.
While all the paint was drying I went out in the garden and dead-headed some plants and cut some roses from my Black Magic Rose which had climbed (it is not a climber, but wanted to be) up into the fig....darn, more roses for the bathroom!
OH! I have to show you what I got yesterday at an Estate Sale!

It is a little demitasse coffee pot! As you can see, I had some already, so of course it had to come home with me!! Isn't it sweet?? No chips, or cracks and it was barely used!
What a day!!
Have a great weekend!

Shawna's visit

Our eldest daughter has a dear friend that I have known and watched grow up through middle school and high school. We went to her wedding 2 years ago. Today, she came to visit with her 2 month old baby daughter, Sophia. Oh my gosh. When did I get so old?
I made herbal tea and cinnamon fingers to serve...you gotta keep nursing moms up on food and fluid, right??

Cinnamon fingers, have you ever had one?? They are strips of bread, smothered in butter, then dredged in cinnamon sugar and baked for about 8 minutes at 400 degrees...oh so yummy. Not diet friendly, but good with tea.....
It was wonderful to see the new Mom...and her adorable baby....
Now mind you, the young lady in the black and white shirt is my eldest, Emily...the young lady with the baby is Shawna, and the other young lady, is MY youngest, my baby, Melissa. Melissa is a newly wed soon to celebrate their first anniversary....oh my goodness....how time flies!

Thank you Shawna for sharing your little one....what a wonderful time....

Great Wednesday

Ah, the joys of producing food in the garden!
I go out in the morning and again in the evening to harvest blueberries. A few get taken by the birds, but by and large, we get about a cup a day....yummmmy!
Today, I mostly did what I call, "puttering" in the garden. Tidying this, plucking that, digging this , planting that....
I planted the hydrangea my daughter gave me in the wonderful clay urn she got. Isn't it beautiful? I haven't had great luck with them, so here's hoping....
Then I pulled out the old fern that was in this cast iron urn, and planted this lovely fushia, also from my daughter.
The peas are now gone. At this time of year, peas often develop powdery mildew...it changes the flavor and they look really bad...so I pulled all those out and planted Blue Lake beans(Ferry Morse from Home Depot). The radishes hadn't done well either, so I took those out and made two rows. One row of beets and another of Italian heirloom onions (Cooks Garden)....hope those work....
IN this bed you can see my sunflowers are doing quite well, as are the zucchini squash....on the other side of the sunflowers, my fava beans have started to come up! Yipeeee!
And then.....I took out and reset each of these brick pavers...
They had started to pull away and not feel so good on my feet and looked a little messy. So, I weeded and pulled them out and just redid them....It looks a little neater, don't you think??
All done for the day....I am bushed! With dieting and exercising I am ready to eat what I started early this morning....bean stew...
It is made with some dried beans that I bought yesterday at Whole Foods. It was an heirloom bean collection. I soaked them all night, rinsed them thoroughly this morning and put them in the crock pot. Later I added broccoli, tomatoes (frozen from last year), celery, spinach and oyster mushrooms. I am going to serve it with goat cheese on top. The calories add up to about 250 per serving, maybe less....as there is no meat.
Have a great evening....

Tuesday is for cleaning and ....

I cleaned, did laundry and shopped.... I went to Whole Foods after I had a disappointing trip to Sprouts. I wanted to buy some greens and beets to put into a "juice" and wanted a few other things. It was fun! They are so big and so full of goodies...their meats are wonderful as is the fish. It was nice to see lots of  lamb to choose from....roasts, ground, stew, shanks etc...you don't see much lamb at other stores. And all the other goodies....never thought how many different cheeses, yogurts, and you name it....It was fun to see different foods.....
I also wanted to remind those of you who read the blog....I still have the "sale" on. Just use the coupon code "blog friend" at checkout and save 20%!!
Consider taking a look! www.WildOakDesigns.etsy.com

Hope to see you soon.....be sure to let me know if you are interested in several items, I can arrange special groupings and fix shipping....
Thanks for looking!

Saturday's Sofa for sale

Just to let those of my readers who might be interested and live fairly locally. The Saturday's sofa is for sale. I decided that it would be better for a buyer to pick their own fabric. It would be wonderful to adapt the sofa to meet your decor...French Country, Shabby chic, Traditional, or a blend....
Saturday's Sofa is beautifully made, just needs recovering either by your upholsterer or mine (he does fabulous work!) In fact he is giving it space at his shop for me, since Hubby wants to clean up the garage and make it so two cars can fit...
Contact me if you are interested....it is also posted on Craigslist for Orange County....

Remember the finish on the wood has already been done, and these pictures do not do it justice. It is awesome piece, I just didn't have room for it...
It would be delightful in a dining room pulled up to a table, livingroom and family room....
Thanks for looking....

Pass the Peas please....

One of my goals is to raise as much of the produce as possible in our garden for Thanksgiving....
Today, I got to harvest my peas! I weighted them, it came out to four pounds. Probably when shelled, not enough to do much, but there are still more peas on the plants....so we will see.
Not bad for a little suburban backyard....
I also managed to make a blackboard from an old kitchen cabinet door that someone was throwing away....I glued on appliques and used my chalk paint ...and voila! A chalkboard....
Fun! I kept the cabinet door out of the trash, and got a chalkboard!
Have a great weekend....

Tablescapes

Okay, so I called the upholsterer and he is picking up the sofa tomorrow!! Yeah! The dropcloths washed beautifully and I am excited to see it get done. He told me it may be a bit of time, he is slammed, but at least Hubby can put his car in the garage.....
So, then I played with tablescapes today...I used one of the washed dropcloths as a tablecloth and some off white burlap draped across. This table will probably be my buffet table, so I am figuring my decor....
Here is where you come in...I need thoughts and suggestions....

I am thinking that it seems flat, and that I should find a way to give height somehow, perhaps taller. Put a box underneath to raise the centerpiece up?  I am playing in my mind with using those really long stemmed artichokes and some flowers....
What do you think...I am not the best at tablescapes....I could use suggestions...

Painting furniture

Today, I jumped into painting Saturday's sofa. I couldn't wait. I have been thinking about painting it since I discovered it. So, away I went.....
Here is on Saturday....

Here it is today, it is on its back right now for painting...and so you can see it better....

What do you think?? In person, it is even better...can't wait for it to get covered.
So, while I had the paint out, I decided to paint the chair I bought months ago....so I worked on that also, same method....

So, I have been busy...
While paint dried I washed and dried the fabric for the sofa....I am going with the dropcloth material that I mentioned before. It washes beautifully and gets soft with washing. In fact, I am so excited about that material, I am going to get more for other projects....
Not a bad bit of work.
Sofa's back feet need to be painted...and it will go to get recovered.
Both the sofa and the chair are for sale if anyone is interested.
And if someone wants different fabric, and wants to buy it before it gets recovered contact me....The chair will be getting a seat cut and covered also....
That's life here at Wild Oak Designs....
Thanks for stopping by....
